How to Make URL Hyperlinks in InDesign for PDFs

OK, so there may not be too many opportunities to do this, but I have a client that publishes a newsletter through PDF, and they need their email addresses and urls to be live links.

I found two ways to do it. One way is through using InDesign's "Interactive" options. Here is an in depth, step-by-step tutorial on how to make URL Hyperlinks using InDesign (it's pretty easy) but here's the run down:

1. Highlight the text you want to be the hyperlink (you will need to color it and underline it or do something to it or it will just look the way it looks and no one will know it's a hyperlink)
2. From the Menu, go to Window, then Interactive, then Hyperlink
3. Click the little New icon at the bottom of the pallette
4. Select URL in the type field and type in the URL (http://www.domain.com -or- mailto:emailaddress@domain.com)
5. Select Invisible rectangle and none for the highlight field
6. Export to PDF, make sure to check the Include Hyperlink button on that first screen

That's it.

Now, here's another way.

That first way is handy if you want to have the link read something other than the actual URL or email address. (you know, like link as opposed to http://www.goycodesign.com)

If you want to display the email address or URL and let that be the link:

1. Highlight the text
2. Underline it
3. Color it (blue or whatever)
4. Export to PDF

That's it. You don't have to add a "mailto:" or an "http://" or anything. Nice. Either Adobe Acrobat is smart and sees the link with the underline or InDesign does something.

Either way, it works.
